Is it possible to get a mortgage given I am in the Army - posted in Germany?

I am currently in the British army. We have moved around a lot including Germany. I am looking to relocate my wife and child back to Sussex due to work and child care. Can you help? Thank you

Ask the Specialist response:

This is an interesting one.

We do often have enquiries from members of the Armed Forces who have frequently found it difficult to get a mortgage due to their residency overseas and/or having changed their address quite often.

They tell us they usually find that most lenders are unable to credit score them at all or their credit score with a lender falls below what is required for the mortgage they require.

Having said that, there are some lenders we work with that can consider this scenario. Whilst they will want to check your credit file for good conduct, they will not credit score – so multiple recent addresses and addresses overseas will not affect your credit worthiness.

The minimum deposit you would require in today’s market is 5%. Typically, the larger your deposit the lower your mortgage rate will be.

Additionally, we’ll need to find out a little bit more about your age and income plus when you expect to retire from the Forces and what plans you have for income on retirement e.g. pension etc.

To obtain an indication on a mortgage rate you can either check our selection of armed forces mortgage rates or alternatively I'd recommend speaking to one of our Advisers on  +44 203 216 2037 or send us an enquiry online.
